On the 21st May I headed over to Dorney Lake for the Human Race events ITU Sprint Distance Triathlon World Championships Qualifier, sponsored by Nuffield Health. Yes it was also my first ever full distance sprint tri, as my previous ones only had a 400m swim. Slight side note but sprint distance triathlons are badly named – they are not a sprint and are indeed an endurance event! As per usual I put myself in the deep end and wanted to see how I would fair against the best. Here is my swim wave in the water waiting to go. It was a little bit chilly treading water at 15 degrees, but was fine once I got swimming.
Overall I was disappointed with my swim as I know I can go quicker, but the rest of the race went well. So I will continue to get into the cold lakes to keep practicing and improve it. My times were:
- Swim (750m): 15:02mins
- T1 1:12mins
- Cycle (21.2km) 36:55mins
- T2 00:56mins
- Run (5km) 22:27mins
Looking at my splits for my age cat I was 23rd in the swim, 5th fastest in T1 (moving me up to 20th position), 13th fastest on the bike (moving me up to 18th position) 14th fastest in T2 (keeping me in 18th position) and 15th fastest in the run. As one girl overtook me which moved me back down to 19th overall. So a top 20 result in my first qualifier.
I’ve now got just over a month until my next qualifier, where I’ll be tacking a sea swim and hopefully earning myself an even better result.
